Book description

19 year old Emylene Stipe is a 2nd generation Goth who, like every teenage girl, is trying to find her place in the world. One night she comes upon an old painting in an antique store and is compelled to purchase it. When she brings it home an image of a young woman appears in the sketch and then magically materializes in her apartment. Emylene nick-names her 'Poinsettia' and they soon become fast friends. But Poinsettia has an ulterior motive for her sudden and strange intrusion into her host's life which causes Emylene to question her whole belief system.

My review

First of all, I have to thank the author for giving me such a wonderful book. This kind of Goth princess story is very new to me.I can't say how much I enjoyed reading .If I have to do justice to his great writing, I have to review it in parts based on characterization, entertainment, story and suspense.

First half

The author gives us a little introduction about the main protagonist Emlyne stipe, a young second generation goth princess in Toronto so that we can involve more with the story. It was a good start. The story is written in a very simple manner and also very light to read the book. Everything is picture clear.

First half. I can't say it is either fast paced or slow paced. It is equally balanced. We get a clue of Emylyn's character as a Goth princess and her stubbornness towards her parents. I liked her saying being a Goth feels more pain but being a goth princess gives much pain than that.

Then the author surprises us with more interesting new characters.First, Nancy who is nick named as Nostra-Dame by Emyln. They soon become close friends who cannot be separated, even their own parents fail in this. Then one day, Nostra-dame's parents not able to tolerate their indecent acts, they leave Toronto and Emylene is left all alone.I thought Emyln was a lesbian.

Then Stelio, a charming young man who enters her life. She is immediately attracted to him because of his intelligency.

And enters Poinsettio, a strange girl who escaped from the painting that Emyln bought from an Antique shop. Now Stelio is dead. This worries Emyln even though she broke up with him.He is so young to die of heart attack. How did he die all of a sudden? These thoughts worries her very much. The first half is flawless and very entertaining. I couldn't stop reading .

Rating 5/5

Second half

I have to say very, very honestly, I didn't really like the second half that well.It was very blunt at many places.I just felt there were more ramblings than to the story.Though I didn't like most part of the second half, I liked all the flashbacks of the Vrykolakas, how it all started and how Emlyn got involved in this mess.I also learnt what's this strange word mean by different people. And a nice turning point, I don't want to really say this because of spoilers.I really didn't think this great suspense coming. But I guessed then dropped it off as the story was going to end.

On the whole, the story is very well-written and neat.Loved the beginning, it's very perfect and I enjoyed so much reading.Loved the flashbacks of Vrykolakas and the ending.

Quotes from the book
“The symbol for eternal life,” she commented. “When a person dies her heart is weighed against the ‘feather of truth’.If the heart is heavier than the feather, it means the person has committed too many crimes…”“…and can never cross over…”“…and their soul is destined to wander forever.

“All my life they told me I was special, but now all I feel is stupid.”

“I look at you and I see the seed of something that could become a rare and magnificent flower. But to realize this you will need to have full control over your emotions, you will need to know what to do and when to do it without letting pride, remorse or misguided zeal get in your way.”

Recommendation I really don't think anyone would miss such a great book like this one. This Goth and Vrykolokas story is a must read.

Killing Nazis

Book Published on:February 10th 2013
Genre:Crime thriller

Book Description:

Themis is a burnout painter who stumbles on a crime scene. Ali, one of his black neighbours, is brutally stabbed to death in an alley in Thessaloniki. Themis spots two Neo-Nazis lurking nearby and then it hits him: inspiration courses through him and he creates a masterpiece. Themis craves inspiration as much as the truth though.... But is inspiration worth dying for?

My review:

It's a brilliantly written book with great characterization. The main protagonist is Themis,  a painter who is a very disturbed man which is why he forces himself to believe that he is a psychopath. He lives like a prisoner in his own apartment and cares for nothing other than his talent.

It is because of his grandmother who has found his talent as an artist at a very young age and it is she who tells him to concentrate only on his talent as an artist rather than on temporary things like friends, girls, etc. At this point we come to know Themis is a man who learns to protect his only gift as an artist.but until one day, Ali, his black neighbor is brutally murdered by some unknown persons.

Themis is very much shaken by this incident although he doesn't have any relationship with Ali. It is due to the two Neo-Nazis laughing at the crime scene, he develops a strong feeling that they are the ones who had killed Ali.He has a strong history of hate for the Nazis. His grandmother's husband was killed by them.

He also heard a rumor that her grandmother was a spy and she has killed some of the Nazis. This is a reason that  leads him to stalk one of the Neo-Nazis and also kill him in the same way that Ali was killed. There is a twist here which i don't want to disclose due to spoilers. On the whole, I had a great time reading the novel.

My rating: 4/5

Recommendation:This book has strong adult content which is not suitable for very young readers. Also there are many grammatical mistakes in this book, like for instance, in page No.13 and 14, there are wrong tenses used in some sentence. But this doesn’t really matter as the story is really good. This is a great suspense thriller.

Gamescape(Serial episode.1) by Cege Smith

My Review

The story revolves around Laney grey, a 28 year old woman who is close to dying. Almost every doctor she meets tell her the same thing that her cancer is incurable. But until one day,  a man named Victor visits her in the hospital and tells her, she can be cured if she agrees to do the assignment his pharmaceutical company give her even if it means to kill people. This assignment is only known as Gamescape.

If she wins this, she will be given a chance to live an extra-ordinary healthy life devoid of all the diseases in the future.Whether she agrees for Gamescape or not? What is going to happen to her if she agrees? Will she be able to succeed along with a number of potential competitors just like her? This is the suspense that will be continued on next episode..Since this is an introduction to many upcoming series, It is hard for me to give an extensive review. But despite that it is a nice read.I will definitely recommend this book to anyone who is fond of a  good serial.

My thoughts

I didn't like the fact Laney Grey's father left her just because he lost his wife.If he has lost his wife, then she has lost her own mother. And also at some places I felt like Laney Grey is over reacting, let it be her boyfriend or Gamescape officials. There is no doubt, this will indeed make a good action packed serial.

This is why you should have a sister...................

A sister is someone who loves you from the heart,

No matter how much you argue you cannot be drawn apart.
She is a joy that cannot be taken away,
Once she enters your life, she is there to stay.

A friend who helps you through difficult times,
Her comforting words are worth much more than dimes.
A partner who fills your life with laughs and smile,
These memories last for miles and miles.

When she is by your side, the world is filled with life,
When she is not around, your days are full of strife.
A sister is a blessing, who fills your heart with love,

She flies with you in life with the beauty of a dove.

A companion to whom you can express your feelings,
She doesn't let you get bored at family dealings.
Whether you are having your ups or downs,
She always helps you with a smile and never frowns.

With a sister you cannot have a grudge,
She is as sweet as chocolate and as smooth as fudge.
Having a sister is not just a trend,
It is knowing you can always turn to her, your best friend.

I love my sis.........
